Helicopter aerial sprays a 1,500 acre infestation of Phragmites on the north end of Utah Lake near the Lindon Boat Harbor Thursday morning, as part of an ongoing $1 million state weed eradication program. The common reed is considered an invasive species. The tall wispy plant grows so dense, it crowds out fish habitat, lowers water quality, blocks public access to lakes and streams and has invaded farmland in Saratoga Springs, Lehi and other cities and lowered crop production. It is also prone to drying out and burning, raising the likelihood of wildfires.
