J. C. Malone of Hooper, Utah captured the championship title in calf roping and placed third in all-round cowboy at the 2003 35th annual Utah High School Rodeo Association state finals in June. Although slow times during the week at nationals bumped Malone out of the all-round running, he was looking for a top stop in both the steer wrestling and calf roping events. Above, Malone readies his horse Scooter for the morning steer wrestling competition. He placed second in the event with a time of 4.252seconds.
