Francisco Kjolseth | The Salt Lake Tribune Paula Trater, left, seasonal biological technician for the Utah Reclamation Mitigation and Conservation Commission, also known as "the frog lady" counts egg masses along with Native Aquatics Biologist Mark Grover in a wet land area along the Provo river near Heber City on Wednesday, April 19, 2012. The arrival of spring means it's time for Columbia spotted frogs to start looking for mates. A couple of weeks after DWR biologists hear the frogs' mating calls, they look for large, gelatinous egg masses that float in nearby water bodies. Each egg mass contains 400 to 500 frog eggs, and inside each egg is a wriggling, developing tadpole. Biologists study the egg masses and use them to learn more about the frogs' population size, breeding success and habitat. Biologists survey these populations because the Columbia spotted frog is on the Utah Sensitive Species List.
