"There are two types of stories — there are Payne's stories and there are others — and all others paled in comparison." — Benjamin Marx, commanding officer Payne, 26, of Howell, was killed when a roadside bomb detonated near his Humvee. The Army specialist, who had done a previous tour in Iraq with the Marine Corps, was assigned to the Army's 497th Transportation Company, 44th Corps Support Battalion, 1st Corps Support Command, in Fort Lewis, Wash.
