Obituary: Gregson Glenn Gourley
MIDVALE - Greg was born in Murray, Utah on May 25, 1967 to Jerome and Judy Murray Gourley. He grew up in South Cottonwood and Sandy attending local schools and graduating from Hillcrest High School. He served an honorable LDS Mission in the Eastern Pennsylvania Mission. Upon returning, he attended Salt Lake Community College where he completed two associate degrees. He also became a licensed private investigator. While stationed in Louisiana he attended Northwestern State University and the University of Maryland while in Italy.
Greg married his best friend and sweetheart, Collette Hansen on June 6, 1992 in the Salt Lake Temple. Their union has been blessed with four beautiful children, Austin (age 10), Brandon (age 5), Colton (age 3), and Alexa Layne, (age 3 months). Greg was a gentle and loving husband, a devoted father and a genuine patriot. Greg held numerous Church positions, including serving in the presidency of his Elder's Quorum in the Hopkinsville, KY Ward.
Following a family tradition of military service, Greg joined the Utah Army National Guard and served proudly with the 1457th Engr Bn. during Operation Desert Storm. Having a strong desire to serve with the regular army, he transferred into the Special Forces and completed his airborne training and enlisted in the Infantry Branch of the United States Army. He was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division. Greg and Collette were stationed at Fort Polk, LA, then spent three years in Italy and finally were stationed at Ft. Campbell, headquarters of the 101st Airborne Division.
Greg and Collette recently closed on their first home and were so very thrilled. During the initial invasion of Iraq, SSG Gourley served 11 months. His second tour of combat duty in Iraq began on January 22nd. Greg and several of his comrades were killed in action on February 22, 2006, when a roadside bomb detonated and destroyed their vehicle. SSG Gourley was the recipient of numerous military awards and citations, including the Meritorious Medal, Purple Heart, and the Bronze Star.
Greg is survived by his wife, Collette; their four children, (as listed above); his parents, Jerome and Judy Gourley; his sister, Keirsten (Frank) King, Mesa, AZ; and brother, MAJ. Eric J. (Lindsey) Gourley, Belton, TX; grandmother, Adena Nell Gourley, West Jordan; as well as loving aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. He was preceded in death by a niece, Kennedy King; and his maternal grandparents, Ralph and Helen Murray; and his paternal grandfather, George A. Gourley.
In lieu of flowers, a trust fund has been established at Wells Fargo Bank under the name of the "Gourley Memorial Fund." Contributions may be made at any Wells Fargo Location, or mailed to: Wells Fargo Bank, 995 East Ft. Union Blvd., Midvale, Utah 84047. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, March 3, 2006, at the Midvale Utah Union Fort Stake Center, 590 East 7200 South, Midvale, Utah. Friends will be received from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. before the service. Interment will be at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 17111 South Redwood Road, Riverton, Utah.
